During the Nineteen Sixties and lasting until the beginning of the Seventies, a unique type of American motorcar appeared on the scene , and almost instantly became widely popular, particularly with boy racers , before fading rapidly from the scene to become a sought after Classic – The famous ‘Muscle Cars’.
Muscle Cars as their name suggests because of their large and powerful performance motors and blazingly fast acceleration.
Most muscle cars were built with V8 or V12 motors generating over 300 to 400 bhp and thence were always extremely costly to cover .
Muscle cars were also fitted withhigh performance engine parts such as specialist multiple valves , cams , intake manifolds advanced carburettors and free flowing exhaust systems that helped to generateextra engine power and consequently – higher car insurance premiums
American performance cars before The 1960’s were normally the heavy prestige motors fitted with the marques most powerful engine available .
The exception to the usual was the Chevrolet Corvette , America’s first sports car built in 1953 . During 1962 the Corvette had been upgraded with a large V8 327 hp engine and became the first of the class of two seater US Muscle cars, replacing the much heavier models .
With the success of the Ford Mustang shown to the public for the first time in 1964 other makers marques were quick to follow and led to most of the sports car market being controlled by lightweight vehicles with large V8 engines under the hood which were called ‘Pony Cars’, although there were many exceptions as older classics such as the Ford Thunderbird were upgraded with larger V12 motors .
The Muscle car period ended The last Muscle Car was manufactured in the 1970’s with the oil crisis and petrol rationing , which when combined with the high cost of insurance and the start of exhaust emission controls , led to a downgrade of some engines and the cars passed into history as some of the greatest American Classics ever produced .
